The paper making is a function of various machine parameters and effect of chemical additives starting from refiner and culminating at the reel, is a long and complex process. Significant developments have been made in all areas of paper making. The scale of operation and production speeds has little room for error. Modern paper making would not be possible without advanced process control and diagnostic methods. The variations in the heterogeneous raw material, and the sophistication of the pulping and paper making process required a in-depth understanding of the mechanism involved.
High speed paper machines pose challenges of drainage at forming section of paper machines, the alignment or orientation of fiber is a function of slice opening and jet-velocity of head box has to be controlled specially for agro residues and recycled pulps. The proper selection of drainage elements and use of right type of retention and drainage aids are necessary for optimal properties of paper at paper machine. With growing demand for high quality cultural papers, industry using different types of formulations and technologies for surface sizing. With indigenous raw materials, achievements of desired smoothness is the biggest challenge specially in case of newsprint from recycled fibers. Further, mentioning proper tension at rewinder is a key to the proper reel built up which affects various converting processes like printing etc.
Break through technological solutions are required from refining to reel to develop paper and paperboard of lowest gsm which would reduce fiber chemical and energy consumption. The theme of IPPTA Seminar “From Refiner to Reel – Key Steps for Production and Quality Excellence ” has been chosen to share the national and international experience in this area.
